The Marshalltown Police Department will be utilizing a mobile speed camera to assist with traffic safety initiatives in our community. The mobile speed camera is part of an Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) program approved by the city council in 2022 and implemented in 2023. The mobile speed camera will be used to assist with speed enforcement in school zones and in high complaint areas. The goals are to reduce crashes, slow drivers down, and enhance safety in our neighborhood. Speeding is a significant problem in the community and is a problem the community frequently complains to the police department about.
Weather permitting the mobile speed camera will be deployed into the community beginning the week of April 1, 2024. Citations will be issued if vehicles are captured by the camera exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more. Each week, the police department will announce via social media the location of the mobile speed camera. City government wants community members to be fully aware of the mobile speed camera location. The goal is to encourage motorists to obey posted speed limits. We hope to issue zero citations. It is up to the public to obey speed limits.
